… on not waving extra time away

When everything is busy it is all too easy to let less exciting areas of admin slip a little. Expenses, accounting, even catching up on events and getting time for future planning can be tricky.

It has been a bit like this recently, and with travel starting again the pressure is only going to increase. It will be back to shopping whilst on the train, and completing expense forms in the airport, on the phone, I suspect.

However, towards the end of this week, there was, fortunately, a bit of respite. As such I was able able to complete a few things that needed doing, including giving the RO-AR.com website a bit of a spruce up. It is a great feeling to have tasks ticked off, prepared and ready to take on a few new things next week.

Next week, of course, could be an important week for many in England. No I am not talking about the football, although I will be watching, but the impending relaxation of pandemic restrictions in England.

With fairly lax restrictions here already and increasing case numbers it seems strange to remove the few controls we do still have. Most people I spoke with this week have echoed the same sentiment, and experts did not hold their punches.

With a new variant (the Lambda variant from Peru) and what appears to be a continued poor understanding of exponential growth, this does seem to be increasing risk to overall health and certainly does not appear to follow the precautionary principle… (if you are wondered what happened to the ε, ζ, η, θ, ι, κ, variants btw, they do exist, they are on the WHO site).

However, with city centres and the economy struggling against multiple headwinds (including COVID & EU exit), together with the whopping cost for furlough payments I suspect (although not admitted) an economic decision has been made. Fingers crossed it does not go horribly wrong.

This makes the full and complete end of furlough and other support measures likely, all as part of this return to ‘normal’. With the economy, already riding a cresting wave, under all these support measures, their removal has every likelihood to be the trigger that causes everything to crash.

Collections volumes, which have been relatively benign for the last 9 months, as a result at likely to start seeing increasing pressures in more sectors. It is one to watch closely, the next few weeks and plan contingencies ahead of time.

This is where that extra time, doing admin tasks, and getting ready can pay dividends. Something to ponder over the weekend.

Midsummer starts

It is just past mid-summer and although the longest days are supposedly behind us, dawn is still starting at 4 am. It is frightfully early, sometimes tiring, albeit a welcome change from the dreary mornings in November.

I was reminded of the benefits of getting up early in a recent article and resolved to log my own experience… details below (with apologies to, not to mention admiration for, Laura Mabille, Richard Branson and Dwayne Johnson)… I clearly still have some way to go!

Workwise, I was also struck by the increasing importance of video as a communication tool. Having monitored this area for a while, it is definitely expanding, becoming more and more popular. Clearly effective, it will be interesting to see where this goes, especially as we start to return to face-to-face meetings… I suspect it will be here to stay, in part at least.

Out and about again this week, so looking forward to it… have a good week everyone.

Perché mi sveglio ogni mattina alle 5:30

Why do I wake up at 5:30 every morning?… We’ve all seen those articles on LinkedIn: Richard Branson does it, Tim Cook does it and Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson certainly does it.

Now, I’m not knocking getting up early and undoubted there are benefits; extra time in the day to exercise, read and get focused on what needs to be done. As I get older I also like to get up earlier, it’s a good time of the day.

However, in reading an article on the topic (Italian homework – English translation), it struck me that my early morning routine was far from that of the stars of business and screen, often cited as examples. So here is my morning routine in all its glory:

  • Wake up, the cat is hungry and is meowing
  • Downstairs, scoop cat litter tray
  • Feed cat
  • Boil the kettle, trying to ignore the cat, who is now complaining for more food
  • Make tea, leave bag in
  • Read the news on phone, avoiding social media, although WhatsApp already active with 20 messages discussing who is or is not going to rugby this evening (I don’t play)
  • Upstairs, wake family, a gentle “it’s time to get up”
  • Downstairs again. Start on packed lunches, nothing complicated today sandwiches
  • Encourage cat to go outside, refuses it’s raining
  • Upstairs, “really time to get up”, briskly open curtains and windows
  • Bathroom, clean teeth, get changed. No formal meetings or videos today, so signature lockdown polo shirt and feece top
  • Back to family: “Are you getting up yet”?
  • Downstairs, more tea
  • Cat uses litter tray again. Suddenly I dont feel hungry now. Clear litter tray, open door, cat now back on sofa
  • Shout upstairs…. “where are you, need to be downstairs now”
  • Get breakfast things out
  • Alarm goes off…. time for cat injection (diabetes)
  • Inject cat, avoid claws at all cost
  • Movement upstairs, shout “don’t use all the water, a quick shower please”
  • Feed cat again
  • “What is going on, you are going to be late!!”
  • WhatApp now buzzing, school lift on their way
  • “is everything ready”?
  • “downstairs now”
  • Reminders for sports kit, muscial instrument, lunch, mask and bag… (phone is never a problem)
  • Successful departure for school – on time, just
  • 20min on bike
  • Shower… lukewarm
  • Make more tea
  • Start work, first meeting

Do you think ‘the Rock’ has cats?? I do seem to be missing the quiet focused contemplation, meditation and educational reading. I am just not sure how to fit it in, until there is no school run or I become an international movie star… Now there’s an idea 🙂

All of this of course is a lockdown enabled routine. Pre-lockdown it was simpler. Get up, go to airport/train station, commute to destination, start work.

On balance I know which I prefer!

Have a good weekend everyone.
